Monday 7 December 2026 is the observed Constitution Day public holiday in parts of Spain. If you need groceries, medicine or a way across town, the useful answer is not that everything is open or everything is closed: it depends on the place and the provider. Some shops and restaurants may welcome customers; others may close or keep different hours. Public transport may run to a different timetable.

Constitution Day itself is 6 December, which falls on a Sunday in 2026. The official 2026 labour calendar lists the following Monday as a public holiday in Andalucía, Aragón, Asturias, Cantabria, Castilla y León, Extremadura, the Community of Madrid, the Region of Murcia, La Rioja and Melilla. It is not a public holiday throughout Spain. Tuesday 8 December is a nationwide holiday, so check that day separately too.

Grocery shopping: check the branch, not just the chain

There is no single Monday shopping rule that tells you whether a supermarket near you will open. Spain’s Ministry of Commerce explains that autonomous communities set their own commercial opening arrangements and that certain categories of shop can have different rules. A date on an authorised opening calendar gives a business permission to trade; it does not guarantee that a particular branch will choose to open or stay open all day.

Start with the supermarket’s own website or app. For example, use Carrefour’s store finder to locate the exact branch, then consult its holiday-opening information. Look for the address as well as the name: two branches of the same chain can have different arrangements. Check for a specific Monday 7 December notice rather than relying on the ordinary weekly schedule.

If the holiday information is missing, unclear or looks old, call the branch and ask: “¿Abren el lunes 7 de diciembre? ¿Hasta qué hora?” That means, “Are you open on Monday 7 December? Until what time?” Confirm the answer close to the day. If you depend on delivery or collection, check the available slot separately; an open store does not necessarily mean a slot is available when you need it.

For a less hurried Monday, buy essentials in advance if you can. Think beyond the main meal: breakfast, household supplies and anything a guest relies on can be easy to overlook. A small backup plan is more useful than a grand tour of closed doors.

Pharmacies: find the current duty service

A farmacia de guardia is a pharmacy providing duty service outside ordinary hours. The pharmacy you usually visit may not be the one on duty, and the duty period may not cover every hour you expect. Spain’s General Council of Pharmacists’ duty-pharmacy directory is a starting point: select your province or autonomous city to reach local information. In Barcelona province, the pharmacy college also provides Farmaguía, a locator for pharmacies and their services.

Check the municipality, address and duty hours for the time you actually need to visit. Consult the current listing close to departure; where practical, call to confirm the pharmacy is on duty and ask whether it has the medicine you need. A nearby pharmacy may also display local duty information, but check that the notice is current. Being on duty does not guarantee that every product is in stock.

If you take regular medication, check your supply and any prescription requirements before the long weekend. Ask your pharmacist or usual healthcare provider for help if you are unsure what you need. If there is a medical emergency, call 112, Spain’s emergency number, rather than waiting for a pharmacy search.

Restaurants: confirm the meal as well as the door

A restaurant’s usual Monday listing is a starting point, not a holiday promise. Check the restaurant’s own website, booking page or phone number for Monday 7 December. Ask whether it is serving the meal you want, what time the kitchen takes its last orders and whether the menu is different for the holiday. A confirmed table is especially helpful if you are organising a group or have a particular place in mind.

Mention accessibility or dietary needs when you contact the restaurant, rather than assuming the online description covers everything. If a step-free entrance or a quieter table matters, ask about it specifically. Save the address and confirmation, and keep a simple alternative in mind: another place you have checked, or ingredients for an easy meal at home. The goal is to enjoy lunch together, not spend it refreshing a booking page.

Public transport: plan the journey there and back

Do not assume that buses, metro services or trains stop for the holiday. Equally, do not assume your usual weekday departure will run. Look up the operator serving your route, select Monday 7 December 2026 and check the actual line, stop or station and intended departure time. Then check the return separately, particularly if you are travelling home in the evening.

In Barcelona, TMB’s journey planner lets you enter an origin and destination and choose a departure or arrival date and time. It also offers preferences such as accessible metro stations and TMB bus lines. For a specific bus stop, TMB’s timetable guidance explains how to select a date to see scheduled times. Check TMB service notices as well, because a planned route and a live disruption are not the same thing.

For Madrid, the official Metro Madrid app provides journey planning, circulation information and the status of station facilities. For rail trips served by Renfe, use Renfe’s website to consult the relevant train or Cercanías information for your origin, destination and date. Elsewhere, use the local operator’s own planner and notices. If the date is not yet available, check again closer to travel rather than treating today’s timetable as a forecast.

Before setting out, check the latest notices again. Allow time for a connection, and verify lifts or step-free access if anyone in your group needs them. Save a screenshot or write down the route, but remember that a saved timetable cannot show a later change.

A few checks for a calmer Monday

Make a short list of what really has to happen on the 7th: perhaps collecting a prescription, buying fresh food or meeting someone for lunch. Beside each item, write the confirmed place, hours and how you will get there. If one detail remains uncertain, call before leaving or move that errand to a day you have confirmed.

Finally, check Sunday 6 December and Tuesday 8 December separately if you need services on those days. The most reassuring plan is not a promise that everything will be open; it is knowing which question to ask, whom to ask and what you will do if the answer changes. That leaves more room for the part of the long weekend you actually want to remember.
